Choosing a name is one of the most joyful parts of bringing a dog home -and if that dog is a rescue, it’s also the first real gift you give them. A good name becomes the word they’ll come running to for the rest of their life, so it’s worth getting right.
At Kannan Animal Welfare (KAW), naming dogs is something we do every week. Every rescue that comes through our doors gets a name -often before we know their full story, sometimes because of it. Sneezy earned hers from an allergy that cleared up. Happy earned his the moment he stopped flinching at hands. Below are 300+ Indian dog names to help you find the right one for your own dog, plus real advice -from people who do this professionally -on naming a rescue.
If you’re naming a dog because you’re about to adopt one, meet our current rescues -several already have names, and we’ll help you figure out whether to keep or change them.

19. How to Name a Rescue Dog: Real Advice from an NGO That Does This Every Day
Naming a rescue dog is genuinely different from naming a puppy, and it’s a question we get asked constantly. Here’s what actually helps:
- Should you keep the shelter name? If your rescue already has a name and responds to it, you don’t have to change it -but you’re also not obligated to keep it. Most dogs, especially those adopted young or those who haven’t had the name long, adjust to a new name within 1–2 weeks of consistent, positive use.
- Avoid names that sound like commands. “Bo” sounds like “No.” “Kit” sounds like “Sit.” A name that rhymes with or resembles a common command creates confusion during training -pick something distinct.
- One to two syllables works best. Short, clear names are easier for a dog to recognise instantly, especially useful when calling them back in a busy street or park -a real consideration in Indian cities.
- Say it with the same energy every time. Dogs respond to tone as much as sound. Use your dog’s name in a warm, upbeat voice, especially in the first few weeks, so they associate it with good things -not just being told off.
- If your rescue came from a traumatic background, take it slow. Some dogs -particularly street rescues who’ve had a hard start -take longer to bond with a new name simply because they’re still building trust in general. Patience matters more than the name itself.
- Let their personality guide you, not the other way round. The best rescue names usually emerge in the first week or two of living with a dog, once you’ve actually seen who they are. It’s okay to foster a dog for a short while under a placeholder name before deciding on “the one.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Any name on this list works well -but many adopters choose names that reflect the dog’s personality or story rather than a generic “cute puppy” name, since rescue dogs often come to you a little older and more themselves than a young puppy would.
Either is fine. If the dog responds well and seems comfortable with their current name, keeping it avoids unnecessary confusion. If you want to rename them, a gradual transition -using both names together for a week or two -works better than an abrupt switch.
Most dogs learn a new name within 1–2 weeks of consistent, positive reinforcement -using it during feeding, play, and praise, not just correction.
Kannan Animal Welfare has dogs available for adoption in Delhi-NCR year-round. Browse our current adoptable dogs to find your next family member -and their next name.
Names like Simba, Coco, Rocky, Tara, Storm, Ginger, Zen, and Sheru work well regardless of your dog’s sex, and many adopters prefer this if they’re not fully certain of the name until they meet the dog in person.
Not usually. Dogs form associations through repetition, not attachment to specific sounds -a consistent, positively reinforced new name is typically learned within days, even for adult rescues.
